Better Breakfast for Better Fertility ~ Fertility Tips with Hannah
I wish I'd made this change sooner. It's so important and benefits overall health, not just fertility!
For years, I was an oatmeal girl. I could take a cup of raw oats and turn them into everything from pancakes to chocolate chip cookies and that is exactly what I did. Every week, I'd buy a giant bag of oatmeal from the bulk bins of my grocery store convinced that I was making a really healthy choice for breakfast and snacks. You better believe that I'd consume most, if not all, of those oats by the time we returned to the store the following weekend.
While I loved by oatmeal breakfast, I didn't realize that it was actually contributing to my blood sugar problems. I could hardly go a few hours, in not an hour, from the time I took my first bite without needing another morsel of food. If I didn't eat in time, I would get shaky, irritable, and dizzy.
Oatmeal may not be your breakfast vice, but what about these other foods that are often touted as "healthy" breakfast options?
Toast
Bagel & Cream Cheese
Pancakes
Waffles
Muffins (even whole grain)
Cereal
While I love toast or pancake smothered in real maple syrup, here's the truth: Naked carbs set you up for a day of blood sugar issues.
We know that blood sugar imbalances are a big factor for hormone problems and poor egg quality - not to mention the countless other ways it impacts your body. While you've probably heard that PCOS and insulin resistance go hand in hand, you don't have to have PCOS for blood sugar or insulin issues to be a factor in your fertility journey.
Join me in “The Fertility Roadmap: Your Guide to Optimizing Conception” where we break down proven strategies for improving fertility.
In fact, I'd venture to guess that there is some component of blood sugar that is a factor in all of our fertility journeys.
Dr. Russell - out of Deleware Institute of Reproductive Medicine - found this to be the case in his study. He prescribed a macro-specific diet for women and, within three months, saw the rate of conception dramatically rise in the study group.
Now, guess what a lot of those women in the study were eating for breakfast.
Yep, all the things I mentioned above ~ naked carbs!
So, what would I tell myself if I could go back? EAT A REAL BREAKFAST!
I now aim for 20g of protein every morning - higher is even better.
Here are some easy favorite foods to have on hand for a heartier breakfast...
Eggs ~ Roughly 6g in a single egg.
Breakfast Meat ~ Protein varies based on the type of meat, but can also provide a substantial serving of quality fats.
Full-Fat Protein Yogurt ~ Look for 15g of protein per serving and not a lot of added sugar.
Start your day with your blood sugar balanced and I promise, you'll find that you feel better, more energized, and mentally strong as the day goes on.
